Week 17 – Tired?

“Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you were coming out of Egypt, how he met you on the way and attacked your rear ranks, all the stragglers at your rear, when you were tired and weary; and he did not fear God.” Deut 25:17-18 (NKJV)

The expression of the Amalekites is the spirit of flesh or carnality. They were the first ones who fought against the Israelites when they came out of Egypt. It is the very first fight we all fight against when we start our spiritual journey – carnality, lust, or world. All three are streams of fallen human nature that the Bible clearly explains.

Now notice, they attacked when the Israelites were most vulnerable – they were tired and weary. How do we deal with exhaustion or tiredness? I have often felt that being tired is an indication of rest-on-demand. But what does the Bible say about ‘resting’ when you get ‘tired’ or ‘weary’? What is the Scriptural way of overcoming exhaustion or tiredness?

‘Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.’ Gen 2:1-2

God was not tired that He rested. He was done with His work. Tiredness is human frailty. Yet, God has shown us the best way to overcome ‘tiredness’ in the process of working in our mundane lives. What did God do when He rested? ‘Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made (Gen 2:3).’ He blessed it and sanctified it – the 7th day. Blessing and Holiness are the divine attributes of God that keep emanating from His being without Him doing anything and affecting the environment in which He rests.

The Scriptural way of treating tiredness and exhaustion is to allow God’s personality to affect our lives. We should learn to rest in Him. Meditate on the divine promises of God and let it transform us. We should pray in the spirit to be edified. We should keep our common sense active to get rid of all distractions that can clutter our minds especially ‘zero-tolerance’ towards screen time. Here is my simple 4-step resting process: Read the Bible – Meditate on the promises – Pray in the Spirit – Reflect within. Apart from sleeping for some time, we should not give too much space for mental inactivity. That is when the ‘spirit of Amalekites’ launches its strike on us.

Tired? Rest in the promises of God. You will not only be refreshed but revived.
